spankerella: (mock by snarkel)
[personal profile] spankerella
So this is my "sporking" at a certain Mary Sue community for those of you who are curious. The post was actually mocking MS fanart and the site in question had a link to Drop at the old angelfire site... which I have now removed. I thought I'd already removed it, but... anyhow. They were mocking fanart... which I think is pathetic. Not manips... art. I can't draw stick people, so I'd never criticize someone's fanart. I don't even go after bad fic. I just don't say anything.

*~*~*
Okay, I've been reading, (because I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment), that A Drop in the Ocean story. Omg, it's so stupid! It starts out with Tara staying at Giles for some reason and all of a sudden she gets an Owl with a letter addressed to her from Dumbledore requesting that she become a teacher's assistant at Hogworts. She goes to the Watcher's Counsil to meet up with Giles where, for another reason Lupin's there and he's "Been waiting hours to get a glimpse of her." O_o;

So, Tara ends up meeting up with Giles and Willow, who both inform her of Owls they'd both recieved requesting them to teachers/teaching assistants. Giles is taking over teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts and Willow is going to be teaching assistant for Care of Magical Creatures.

I left off on chapter two... where Hagrid, Giles. Willow and Tara are in Diagon Alley buying robes and wands. Ollivander ends up showing Willow a wand made from, (~gasp!~), willow with a droplet of vampire blood in the handle... The blood came from where? A vampire with a soul... who was cursed by gypsies... who lives in... LA, California... Yep, you guessed it... Angel's been to Diagon Alley!

I don't know if I should continue reading... but it's too funny to stop now. Willow and Tara so OOC... giggling and grabbing onto poor Hagrid all over Diagon Alley...

*~*~*

Is something wrong with me that this whole thing is kind of... amusing? Like for real. I've been grinning like an idiot since I saw it. I know I don't write everyone's cup of tea, and I will admit that my writing at the beginning of Drop is not as strong as it is at the end. Opinions are like a**holes though... everybody's got one. I find it funny that someone will keep torturing themselves by reading something they're not into though. Eh. No skin off my nose. Though I considered joining this community and replying with... "Hey, thanks for reading". But that would be a very wicked thing to do... wait a minute...

eta: Damned Firefly meme that's been going around since everyone knows what Whedon whore I am...

When you see this on your flist, post your fave Firefly quote.

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater." - Book

"River, honey, he's putting the hair away now."
"Doesn't matter. It'll still be there. Waiting."
- Zoe to River and River's reply

"That's why I never kiss them on the mouth." - Jayne

*nods*

I've mocked my share of badfic in my time--the only true way to keep your sanity whilst archiving it--but I've never understood the point of belonging to a community just so you can read things you don't like. I mean, I have no choice but to read or at least skim things that aren't to my taste, and it hurts me. I can't imagine doing it for fun.

It's not like being a beat or running an archive with this stuff... they look for it. If you beat or archive, you *ARE* gonna get some crap or stuff that isn't your particular taste. That's just a fact.

But to seek it out?

That should be beta not beat. Dammit.

No, really, that is funny. It's barely literate and I'm not sure she's reading the same story.

It certainly made me giggle.

That community doesn't allow responding by the author in question- I think they delete the posts. Evidently,no defending by authors or fans allowed.

Which just confirms my suspicions that I should stay far away and just carry on.

The child in question can neither spell "Hogwarts" nor "Council"....I'm not sure that he or she is really in a position to criticize anyone else's writing.

I haven't read Drop in the Ocean myself, mostly because I've never gotten around to it. (I keep meaning to, but there you are.) I'm very fond of several of your other stories though. Anyway, I'm glad you are finding this funny, instead of getting upset.

Eh. You're not missing much. LOL. It's not going anywhere. Read it if you want. No, I'm not upset. What's the point of being upset about it? It's just their opinion. I know other people have different ones about the fic, so I'm ok with it.

You are right when you say that everyone has a different opinion. I happen to love Drop, it was the first crossover fic that I read, and probably the fic that introduced me to HP fiction in the very beginning.

It doesn't seem as though this person should be voicing her opinion anywhere, but then judging her opinion on her lack of grammatical talent or consciousness regarding her spelling would be unfair.

Needless to say for every person that doesn't like it there is someone who does.

Exactly. That's why I didn't sweat it. Like my trolls. Everybody's gotta do something, I suppose. I can just think of better people to harass than me, you know?

I think some people like to pick on people that other people like to cause a little controversy. If that is their game then fine, they obviously have nothing better to do.

If it had been actually sent to you rather than posted somewhere I think it would have been a different ballgame, something more personal, as it was, posted on a website/lj it was a public "look, I am different to everyone else" attention-seeker!

Wonder if we could suggest something for them to read!!!

It amuses me that their rant was so full of spelling and grammar errors. Also, it made me want to go reread Drop....even though I just reread it 2 weeks ago....

See? There are people who like it anyhow, and that's anough for me. It's just a story... with characters that aren't even really mine.

Okay, first, that made me giggle too. That entire . . . sporking was barely literate. People have entirely too much time on their hands.

Second, since I can't see Firefly quoted without quoting Firefly back:

Mal: "If anyone gets nosy, just...you know... shoot 'em. "
Zoe: "Shoot 'em?"
Mal: "Politely."

Hope you had a good day. ~Em

I did actually. I had a pretty good day. It's been a while since I had one of those.

*giggles* *snorts with laughter* *falls over laughing*
Can't say I blame River. That was one wild mane of hair that man had.

Well, I had the whole Jayne song up, but I figured that'd be a bit much, and we all know I *heart* Jayne with a fierceness. River screeching about Book's hair is the greatest though.

I joined the community in question because I wanted to read the post and comments. First of all, let her have her opinion, like you said they're like a**holes, everyone has one. Second, personally, I love Drop. It's the first crossover I rec whenever I meet someone new to the fandoms. I think it's a wonderful piece of work and the detail, intrigue, and plot twists are truely wondeful.

Third, she posted an apology, if you care. Which we all know you don't, really.

Date: 2005-09-29 12:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spankerella.livejournal.com
Actually, I think it's sort of nice that she posted an apology for something she really didn't need to apologize for. But I'm funny that way. I wasn't looking for it, but all the same, it pleases me a little on some weird level. It goes along my the good day that I had and gives me a little bit of faith back in the creature known as human.

Drop was absolutely the first Buffy/HP crossover I ever read, so it has a very special place in my heart. And because I also can't see a good Firefly quote without thinking of some of my favorites:

"Some people juggle geese!" ~Wash (Our Mrs. Reynolds)

"Well, my sister's a ship... we had a complicated childhood." ~Simon (Objects in Space)

and finally

"Oh my God, it's grotesque! And, oh look, there's something in a jar." ~Wash (The Message) That one may not be exactly right though, off the top of my head...
