Cat and Crow
eta: Progress as of 11:52 PM. Going to bed now.
So here's a little tease of the short "Cat and Crow". It's about 600-700 words. Spider-centric. Very rough. This could all change by the time it hits the press, but the basic idea will be the same. Enjoy.
Cat and Crow
There was running.
Heck yeah, there had been a fair amount of running today. Town then woods. North woods specifically, and now he was in a corn field. He had to think⦠who in the frilly heck planted corn in the Shadow? Seriously. It was creepy. Corn was eerie. It was the most wicked and creepiest vegetable of them all. Everyone knew this, and yet... corn. As if Shadowside wasn't creepy enough without some old creepy cornfield smack in the middle of it. Then again, so were the north woods. The woods north of the university campus were plenty creepy too.
There was a cut on his left pectoral muscle that was bleeding a bit. Taking off in just his pants had not been expected. They'd come to kill him, to take a life away, and he jumped out the window. He would not die so easily. He would not. The only son of John Silas Streg Leonine was no meek kit. Though his sense of direction was a bit off tonight. He had been hoping to hit the campus and make it to the dean for some sanctuary, but he'd somehow ended up in the creepy corn instead.
"Having a bit of trouble, are we?"
The only son of John Silas Streg Leonine jumped a good foot in the air and spun about to see who'd addressed him. A wiry sort of young man jumped down from some sort of hitching post much like what a scarecrow might be nailed to, kicking up some dirt as he landed. The fellow was wearing ratty brown pants and a shirt that might have been white once upon a time. His longish blonde hair was sandy color that looked a bit like straw. The most interesting part of this fellow was his eyes though. One was the blue of the sky, the other was black as pitch.
"Who are you then?" He asked.
An answer would have been provided, but the chasers and killers of the night burst through the row of corn then. Ancients. Older vampires of different bloodlines from before vampires had become civilized and taken a more human form. Monsters with sallow skin, sunken eyes, gnarled fingers, and wearing dirty black robes. Dirty black robes that stank too, now that they were close enough to smell. The wiry blonde fellow took out two of them easily. Well, easily after he ripped the crossbar off of the wooden perch he'd been on and punched it through two of their chests, and Silas Leonine's only son appreciated that very much. He soon dispatched the other two chasing him. Not wholly, as he had no wood on him, but they were definitely down for the count. Then he looked at the wiry boy and blinked his bright green eyes.
"Ancients?" The wiry guy asked. "Were those really ancients chasing you?"
"They were. Were being the key word in that declaration." The prodigal son cleared his throat. "Perhaps we ought to move out of here?"
"Right then." Wiry said. "Your name though?"
"Spider Blue." He shrugged a bit and raked a hand through his platinum hair. "Well, John Spider Blue Leonine, but everybody calls me Spider., and I mostly go by Spider Blue."
"Why?"
"What do you mean why?"
"You're the son of John Silas Streg Leonine, right?"
"And if I am? What do you mean by it?"
"It's just I mean the Leonine name... even the zombies that have been in the dirt for a century know it. It carries weight in the Shadow."
"Maybe I want to carry my own weight."
The wiry boy smirked in an approving sort of way and held out a thin and long hand. "Excellent then. I am Alias Rivern, my friend. I just go by Alias though."
One of the prone attackers groaned.
Spider looked at Alias. "And we're going."
"Right."
