Can I just mention again how much I loathe people who write crossovers in a fandom they're not familiar with? I'm not talking about someone writing one with one of the fandoms being a show they've never seen... because you can find transcripts online. I also know a person who's doing that, but they've been researching the fandom like crazy. They also plan on seeing some episodes soon if not already so...
No, I'm talking about someone who admits they haven't read the books in a fandom... and is writing crossovers using those book characters... just because it's the fic "in" right now. Well, BtVS/HP has been the fic in for a while. But it really irks me for some reason with Harry Potter. I think I might be a Potter snob, though I'm not too keen on it with Anita Blake or Merry Gentry either. I don't know why. It just REALLY gets my knickers in a twist when people write crossovers with HP without even having read the books. I know it's silly, but I've read all of those books at least a couple of times. Especially PoA. I think it's because there are so many Potter characters that I am so gloriously in love with (and meant to sleep with apparently) that I can't stand the thought of someone using them without knowing them. I mean, I wrote "A Drop in the Ocean" for a two part reason... to see if I could and because they were two things I loved in the world, the Buffyverse and the Potterverse. I know my Draco isn't rightly canon, but I happen to recognize and adore canon Draco too. I want a bratty child in his image. It just bothers me. Especially when I attempt to read a fic, and I can tell they haven't read Potter, so I have to give up.
I don't think I'm making sense. I'm just moody. *sigh* Although watching the "DD2: Havana Nights" preview did help a bit today. Yep. That Diego Luna is a sexy little bitch when he dances.

Date: 2004-02-13 08:58 pm (UTC)Why would anyone WANT to write fic in a fandom they aren't familiar with anyway? That does NOT make sense to me. Wouldn't that be more difficult to write & leave the author open to severe flaming by people who actually KNOW the fandom?

Date: 2004-02-15 08:55 am (UTC)I, EmpressVesica, admit I have written a BtVS/HP crossover when as of today I have only read through *voice breaks*, through...BOOK TWO.
But at least I have the good grace to feel awful about it. You know people's characterization is crap as far as matching with canon when I pick up on it. There are a few authors I can think of that even I find myself wondering what books they read.
So for all those who feel no shame, I will apologize. There are few reasons to do that (for a Secret Santa was my excuse) and if you do, knowledgable betas are VITAL. No excuses.
Shape up or ship out people. I mean....No, I should end this rant as the guilt is returning! Must go flog self with soft cover version of the yet-unread Book 3. ~EV
