Ever heard that saying "She'd be late to her own funeral"? Well, she was. We got to the grave side before the body did. My aunt was late to her own funeral. The hearse got lost. It was sort of fitting. She was always late. To everything. Also this was the first funeral I have ever been to where the bagpipes were played. It was nice.

There is a certain sort of poetry in that. I have a feeling your aunt would have been highly amused.

My sympathies. I've been to too many funerals and it never really gets easier. If there's something like this that makes the memory gentler then that's great.

Sorry to hear about your aunt... my family's had at least five funerals this year, off the top of my head. In November, my mother called me to say that my grandma's cousin had passed away. (he was a wonderful man who made everyone feel welcome and loved to cook for us when we visited.) Then about two hours later, she called back to say that Ooops, no he is not dead yet, but he will be... My gran got confused and told everyone that he was dead instead of in the hospital. He was released, and spent two weeks at home where he was most comfortable, and then popped off in his sleep. He will be sorely missed.

When my grandpa died, ten years ago, there was a humdinger of a storm during the funeral. It made me happy, because my first memory of my grandpa was of him telling me that thunderstorms are loud because God is bowling. And everytime he gets a spare, thunder booms. Every time he gets a strike, you hear the crack of lightning. It seemed a fitting send off for the man... for he was a shitkicker. You know the type: big personality, likes to stir things up a bit. He'd grumble and tease my grandma, but you could tell he loved her.
